This photo demonstrates the most spectacular and disastrous effect of the 1959 7.5 magnitude earthquake. This slide formed a barrier that blocked the gorge and stopped the flow of the Madison River and, within a few weeks, created Earthquake lake, almost 160 feet deep. The volume of material that blocked the Madison River below Hebgen Dam has been estimated at roughly one billion cubic feet. There is a US Forest Service Visitor's center here that has a lot of historical information about the quake. | ![]() |
